Top 10 Colors (Pixel By Pixel, Fall 2006)

This customized software grabs the 10 most popular colors from a live video camera and uses them to make a minimalist composition of colored horizontal bars. Typically, the composition displays the colors of a person's skin, clothing and hair - though it can also display the dominant colors of any space where a video camera is placed.

Every frame, the software samples the colors captured by a DV camera, averages and sorts them to determine the most popular colors. The 10 most popular colors are displayed in the form of a bar graph, with the most popular color at the bottom and the 10th most popular color at the top.

This software essentially responds to the dominant colors from an image, while ignoring all form.
